Glacial Erratics

Vendor: UPPERCASE
Type: book

Indulge me for a moment: the title suggests the diminutive errata that give clues to the placement and progress of some massive and slow-moving thing. It seems to me a good metaphor for this collection of writing, research notes journal-pages and thoughts for my works in progress, most specifically a novel that is currently in very early stages. My wife affectionately refers to it was a plog: something like a blog, but paper-based. It definitely takes some inspiration from its online cousin. I’m hoping that there’s an appeal for readers to be provided this snapshot into the evolution of a novel. My current target is to release this semiannually, with each issue showing new passages, notes, and thoughts on previous segments.

In each issue, I’m also going to feature the work of peers whose work I admire. In this issue, you can find the artwork of Calgary-based artist Lisa Brawn, who has been an inspiration not only with her work but her constant and enthusiastic projects. As well, the poetry of Correy Baldwin, who I’ve known for ages and who’s current poetry explores the darker histories of the town where we grew up.

This journal was designed by my wife, Janine Vangool, and published by UPPERCASE Gallery, Books & Papergoods. The inspiration for the design was in geological survey maps, which we frequently rescue from the discard bins at libraries, as well as in japanese folded journals, which are my journals of choice.

Single copies are $5.
